The Manchester Communication Academy is a brand new high school in North Manchester. It opens in September 2010 to Year 7 and Year 12 students.

The Academy is currently being built in Harpurhey, at the corner of Rochdale Road and Queens Road.

It will offer a full range of subjects and will specialise in communication – speaking and listening, languages, drama, media and presentation skills, and information communication technology.

The new school will be special in many ways.

The school will offer a full range of GCSEs and other courses. Learning will be at the students’ own pace, taking exams as and when they are ready for them. Students will also be able to do their homework at the Academy before and after school, with staff from the Academy there to help.

Lessons will be different and interesting and all students at the Academy will be able to use their imagination and grow their talents. The curriculum will encourage teamwork, enterprise and collaboration.  Parents will also be able to help with studies by accessing online updates, reports and information sessions.

Everyone who comes to the Academy will be able to learn by taking part in real life projects with BT, who are a lead partner for the Academy. Young people will become independent learners.

It will have fantastic sports facilities including:

  • a large new sports hall
  • a full size, all weather, flood-lit sports pitch
  • five grass pitches and three other outdoor games areas

The Academy will be open for students and people in the local community to use before and after school and during school holidays.

Sixth form at the Academy

The Academy Sixth Form will be open to Year 12 students on 6 September 2010 and will offer a range of subjects and qualifications including ‘A’ Levels and Diplomas.  Students wishing to take up these courses will need a minimum of 5 GCSE A-C Grades, including Maths and English, and at least a Grade B if they wish to pursue a subject through to ‘A’ level.  We have very high expectations of our post 16 students who will be role models for the younger pupils in the Academy.

In addition to the courses listed below, all our students will access accredited courses in independent research, community projects and key skills. As the Academy is working in partnership with The Manchester College, our sixth form students will also be able to access some courses and facilities there.

Available courses include:

  • ICT
  • Engineering
