December 2010

Having opened its doors for the first time in September to the children of Collyhurst and Harpurhey, Manchester Communication Academy is to launch a new Community College in that will deliver free learning courses to adults in the local community.
From January 2011 the Community College will run daytime and evening courses at the Academy on Wednesdays and Thursdays using the Academy’s post 16 learning area. Working with Manchester Adult Education Service (MAES) the new Community College will deliver courses in English, Maths, IT, Getting Started in Spanish, Art for beginners, First Steps for Teaching Assistants and School Support Staff, First Steps in Health and Social Care and Asian Cooking. The courses will give learners the opportunity to study for certificates and qualifications, to help them back into work or to pursue new job opportunities.
The Community College will also offer ‘taster’ sessions in January, designed to introduce people to a range of more practical training and skills including creative cooking, arts and crafts, homework support, health and fitness, and a parenting forum.
Grahame Knox, of MCA Community Team comments “The Academy itself has been open for everyone in the community since it first opened its doors and now we have an opportunity to extend our services even further. The Academy and now the College represent a real investment in the future of this whole neighbourhood and we want MCA Community College to be a new, local ‘first step’ for many in our community to learn new skills, make new choices and change their future for the better.”
