TOTAL Learning Community

The TOTAL community (Towards Outstanding Teaching and Learning) is faciliated by Peter Hale with 34 colleagues from across all areas.  The group have been looking at improving their teaching and learning through the use of lesson observations, learning walks and revisiting educational theories and ideas.

Content covered this year:

  • Team teaching and use of other adults in the classroom

  • PDBW/SMSC

  • Lesson observation moderation

  • Use of Doodle when assessing students

  • Afl and quality feedback

  • Learning objectives

  • Learning walk summaries

Here are some quotes from staff explaining how their teaching practice has changed as a result of TOTAL....

‚Äč

"I have more ideas for Afl techniques to include within lesson.”

“I use Afl questioning to a greater extent.”

“I have more awareness of learning objectives and the use of other adults in my lessons.”

“I have considered how to demonstrate SMSC and promote PDBW in lessons more.”

“Exchanging ideas with others has enabled me to try new things in lessons.”

Quantitative comments from the community survey:

  • The sessions that staff found most beneficial were on AFL, closely followed by SMSC/PDBW and team teaching in joint second place.

  • Staff found observing a video lesson the least beneficial to their practice, closely followed by the session about using Doddle.

  • Staff would like more sessions on AfL and methods for providing students with feedback.

  • The most popular request for a session that was not covered was ‘Differentitation’.

  • The majority of staff found that the most helpful part of training in TOTAL was being provided with the opportunity to discuss practice with practitioners from other areas.
